World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has undergone significant transformations throughout its 70-year history, but one aspect remained consistent: referring to wrestlers as "WWE Superstars." However, this might be changing.
In a recent press conference, Paul "Triple H"
Levesque, WWE's Chief Content Officer and Head of Creative, broke tradition by referring to the talent as "artists." This marked the
first time in WWE history the term was used officially. Triple H reiterated this term in an
August TMZ clip.
While the term "artist" isn't novel in professional wrestling - NYC-based indie company One Division Pro (1DP) has used
"Sports Artist" exclusively for years - WWE's adoption signals a shift in perspective.
One Division Pro's approach is particularly interesting, as they reportedly prohibit the term "wrestlers" in their locker room. This semantic difference reflects a deeper change in how talent is perceived and valued.
Mr. Labels, owner of One Division Pro (1DP), has released a statement regarding WWE's adoption of the term "artist" to describe professional wrestlers:
"1DP has always strived to implement new and exciting concepts to the industry. It comes as no surprise to us that the term 'artist' is now being used in a mainstream capacity to describe the talented men and women of professional wrestling.
This is not the first time other companies have borrowed from 1DP. We are all together at the end of the day."
